The Entrails is the third chapter and refers to what in English is called the Neapolitan Novels by author/ess Elena Ferrante, who has become something of a cultural phenomenon, particularly in the anglophone world. The chapter investigates the viscerality of the writing process through a close reading of the tetralogy and the imaginative construction of space in creating what has now come to be known as “Ferrante’s Naples.” An examination of space in the novels uses strong geocritical support to provide a “framework that focuses on the spatial representations” while also “explor[ing] the overlapping territories of actual, physical geography and an author’s or character’s cognitive mapping in the literary text (Tally, Robert T. “Geocriticism and Classic American Literature.” English Department Faculty Publications, paper 14. The chapter is an admittedly dense and, at times seemingly inconsistent read—an intentional gesture that mirrors the complexity of the subject(s) it references. Readers should also note that the use of Elena (especially when in italics) is deliberate, serving to highlight the ambiguity between the author/ess and the protagonist, both of whom share the same name.
