This chapter intends to identify the palaeochannels (PLC) using literary and historical records, geological shreds of evidence, and geospatial techniques. The study includes local and regional literature such as Manasamangal and Dhamamangal Kavya (Bengali folk stories) that describe river systems of the past. It also examines the chronological development of the river systems depicted by eminent scholars since the medieval period. However, this evidence in some cases is subjective and controversial but deemed necessary in the absence of other data and records. Besides, the identification of major PLC with many minor courses in buried and abandoned conditions with low-cost geospatial techniques is done. Moreover, geophysical datasets of sub-surface configuration are used for the identification of the PLC. This chapter reveals the nature and properties of PLC in terms of abandoned and buried types. Moreover, spatial configuration (topographic undulation, length, width, and depth) of PLC is measured in this chapter. Additionally, the infiltration rate of PLC fills is examined depending on the specific yield of the sub-surface materials.
