Participatory GIS: A Solution to Traditional GIS Challenges

This chapter digs into the concept, technique, and benefits of Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PGIS) as a solution to traditional GIS challenges. PGIS actively engages local communities and stakeholders in data collection, analysis, and decision-making, aiming to address power dynamics, promote inclusion, and integrate local knowledge into GIS. This chapter emphasizes the concepts of PGIS, PPGIS, VGI, CIGIS, and Web GIS. Outline the methodologies, uses, limitations, and future possibilities of PGIS as well. It demonstrates the significance of community participation, knowledge co-production, and capacity building in PGIS activities. The chapter discusses participatory mapping techniques such as sketch mapping, aerial image interpretation, and mobile mapping, which allow communities to spatially represent their knowledge and perspectives. Furthermore, the chapter explores the advantages of PGIS in solving a variety of difficulties. It goes over how PGIS can help with community empowerment, social inclusion, and local decision-making. The chapter emphasizes the importance of indigenous knowledge systems and local knowledge in improving the accuracy and usefulness of GIS data.
