This contribution approaches the term coincidence from different perspectives. The first section provides a terminological definition, elaborates on the psychological and philosophical dimensions of coincidental events, and discusses the relevance of epistemic access to the coincidental. The second section investigates how complex processes of research and knowledge production are visualized, mediated, and turned into inscriptions. Combined with a visual artistic contribution, we reflect upon attempts to eliminate the traces of the coincidental in the production of immutable mobiles as scientific visual strategies. Selected drawings question the function and use of images in science, which are transformed from representations to presentations. We conclude that similar visual strategies can be observed in both the arts and the sciences.

摘要
