The technique of “scratching,” known from hip-hop culture, is proposed as a method of artistic research. Originating in the DJ practice of manipulating vinyl records, scratching enables the recontextualization of recorded sounds, allowing for new musical creations and insights into preserved time. This chapter extends this concept to physical scratching, likening it to the removal and healing of layers of the skin, and thereby suggests a deeper engagement with the surface. The method of “starting from scratch” is presented here as a way of exploring issues from new perspectives, free from preconceived notions. This method is illustrated by appropriating turntables for artistic research, detaching from established practices, seeking unexplored viewpoints, expanding existing skills, and repeating this process until satisfactory results are achieved. This iterative approach emphasizes openness to failure and the importance of reflection, thereby merging artistic originality with empirical and theoretical insight.
