Wetlands are important ecosystems that offer various utilities, including water purification, several species’ home, and carbon storage. However, wetlands are progressively under pressure due to multiple anthropogenic pressures, pollution, and the alteration of climate. This chapter offers an analysis to the diverse issues that wetland face today starting with a discussion on how they are harmed by aggression such as agricultural expansion, urbanization, and industrial development. Consequences of human activities including wetlands being transformed for agricultural use, reclamation of land for development, and pollution from industrial and recreational activities is described. The chapter then turns to the major concern of pollution whereby chemical run offs from agriculture, nutrient over loads leading to eutrophication and solid waste and even micro plastics are discussed. Furthermore, the article describes thermal and noise pollution impacts on the wetland environment. The chapter advances to further discuss and present the consequences of climate change including sea level changes, temperature variations, hydrological cycles, and carbon storage. In response to these threats, this chapter stresses the need for applying multiple strategies that are aimed at land use, conservation, policy, as well as the rehabilitation of habitats and species. There is also a recognition of the significance of engaging the community while educating them on the need to support conservation. It is hoped that this chapter has offered a brief introduction to ongoing threats and possible strategies for wetland conservation, while stressing the importance of cooperation to address these threats and to preserve this important type of natural resource.
