Wetland-Based Solutions for Urban Water Management

Urbanization presents significant challenges for water management, including increased flooding, degraded water quality, and loss of natural habitats. Wetland-based solutions (WBS) offer a promising approach to address these challenges by integrating natural wetland processes into urban landscapes. This paper provides an overview of wetlands-based solution for urban water management, discussing their principles, applications, benefits, and challenges. Wetlands based solution utilizes constructed wetlands, green infrastructure, and riparian zones to mimic the functions of natural wetlands in urban settings. These systems effectively capture, store, and treat storm water runoff, reducing peak flows, mitigating flooding, and improving water quality through natural filtration processes. Moreover, Wetlands-based solution provide habitat for wildlife, enhance biodiversity, and offer recreational opportunities, contributing to urban resilience and quality of life. As wetlands-based solution offers numerous benefits, their implementation faces challenges such as land availability, maintenance requirements, and regulatory constraints. Successful integration of wetlands-based solution into urban planning requires interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and adaptive management approaches. Case studies from cities worldwide demonstrate the effectiveness of wetlands-based solution in mitigating urban water issues and enhancing urban environments. Wetland-based solution represent a sustainable and holistic approach to urban water management, aligning with principles of green infrastructure, ecosystem-based adaptation, and nature-based solutions.
