Lignin Chemistry and Functionalization for Potential Medical Applications

Lignin is considered one of the most abundant yet under-exploited biomass materials globally. Lignin is a versatile lignocellulosic biopolymer with many desirable properties, including antioxidant, antibacterial, UV protection and biocompatibility. The functionalization of lignin as a complex aromatic polymer has attracted considerable attention due to its potential to unlock diverse applications in various fields, including materials science, biotechnology and environmental engineering. This chapter explores the multifaceted strategies employed for lignin functionalization, which inherently offer precise control over lignin structure and properties, enabling improved solubility, reactivity and compatibility with other materials. In addition, the chapter explores the wide range of potential medical applications for functionalized lignin, from the development of lignin-based biomaterials and drug delivery systems to tissue engineering scaffolds, wound healing dressings and materials with intrinsic antibacterial properties. The challenges and regulatory considerations associated with lignin functionalization are also discussed, as are the emerging trends and opportunities that could shape its future in the medical field.
