This chapter interrogates the devices involved in bringing the ghost story to life in the theatre. Offering an archaeology of three apparatus that have become synonymous with the staging of the genre (the thunder machine, the candle, the white sheet), the chapter argues that as these devices are tasked with making visible what is invisible and operated by hands that are obliged to hide the real sweat of the bodies that create the theatrical magic, there is a paradox proffered that might be exploited to generate further horror.
