Implementation of Romans 12: 9–18 by Caritas Masvingo in Addressing Effects of Climate Change in Masvingo Diocese
摘要
The overarching problem of this article is that of climate change and the subsequent challenges that have emanated from this reality. Currently, the world is grappling with various perspectives on the effects of climate change and how these have negatively impacted nature, the lives of animals and the lives of people especially in regions that are less developed. As Caritas utilises the Scripture text above, it implements Love of neighbour and love of creation. This research focuses on the response given by the Catholic Church through its agents of development referred to as Caritas Internationalis. This organisation is found in most dioceses of the Catholic Church worldwide operating in developmental issues and mitigating challenges of various disasters and more recently climate change. The key content areas are the background reality of continual droughts and floods experienced in Zimbabwe in particular Masvingo region, how Caritas Masvingo’s response includes awareness training programmes as well as hands-on implementation of strategies that mitigate climate change with positive impact on the lives of communities and reclamation of degradation of soil. The research and narration of the involvement of Caritas Masvingo is relevant not only for the current generation but also to empower communities to take responsibility for their environment to sustain life for themselves and future generations. Another important outcome of this research is to highlight that the Church is not a bystander to the pressing challenges besetting the world but an active participant that encourages humanity to live responsibly recognising the values of everything that shares the benefits of Creation.
