Recently, the UK Government has encountered increasing difficulties in addressing the rise of ‘mixed’ forms of extremism. Particularly, the rise in so-called ‘mixed, unstable and unclear’ forms of extremism, where beliefs and attitudes combine in ways that do not fit into traditional ideological categories. Despite emergent extremism including inceldom and misogynistic-driven violence having been well-documented, the merging of different types of extremism, which is rendering traditional categories obsolete, remains underexplored at present. Enhancing our understandings of the contexts and processes that may actively encourage or more subtly influence engagement with ‘mixed’ ideologies, requires shedding light on the complex and varied paths individuals take toward radicalisation. This notion approaches radicalisation as a diverse and multifaceted set of processes, embedded in fluidity rather than bound by fixity.
