Terrace Farming for Better Water Management in Agriculture

Terrace farming is the oldest methods of farming that has recently been brought back and reinvented as a sustainable solution for effective water management in farming. This chapter unfolds the benefits and skills of farming in terraces, emphasizing how the method raises the efficiency in water, minimizes soil erosion, and increases productivity on crops. By creating flat or gently sloping land surfaces, terracing allows better retention of water, reduced runoff, and greater infiltration, making water conservation strategies very effective. Terrace farming is among the earliest forms of agriculture that were ever conceptualized and offered a sustainable solution for efficient water management in modern-day farming. This chapter elaborates the principles and merits of terrace farming, along with the scope for it to become a technique for efficient water use, reduced soil erosion, and better productivity in crop harvesting. By merging gently sloping and flat lands, terracing ensures that more water is retained, lessening loss through runoff and aiding in the recharging of water aquifers to conserve water effectively. It discusses design and construction of terraces, the selection and management of crops to use on terraces, and how to link the other conservation agriculture practices with terracing. Terrace farming offers benefits in a variety of areas: better water harvesting, decreased land degradation, and enhanced biodiversity. This chapter clearly introduces terrace farming as an important intervention in sustainable agriculture and water resource management. It spells out practical ways of adopting and promoting the terrace farming practices for the benefit of farmers, administrators, and interested scholars. By presenting the benefits and application of land-terrace farming, this chapter is an effort in tandem with the global motive to alleviate water scarcity and soil degradation, leading further to food insecurity, and henceforth, a move in support of the transition toward a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system.
