Innovative Soil Health Practices for Better Water Management

Land and soil “play a key role in the climate system” as an essential carbon sink; however, land and soil resources are under increasing pressure from deforestation, urbanization, industrial development, agricultural expansion, and unsustainable farming practices that are undermining their ability to sustain food production, maintain freshwater and forest resources, and regulate the climate and air quality. Hence, there is a dire need to improve and maintain soil productivity in the twenty-first century with increasing agricultural needs and demands. The current book chapter elaborates farms’ novel approaches to improve soil health and quality, and water management. These approaches enhance water use and nurture soil productivity. For instance, planting cover crops provides soil cover, which reduces water loss and erosion, while “no-till farming” preserves soil structure and its capacity to sustain microflora and fauna. Mulching prevents rapid water evaporation. Modifying crop choices and incorporating agro-forestry conserve water distribution. Additionally, amending the soil with calcitrant carbon materials such as biochar enhances water conservation and nutrient availability, and improves the soil’s physiochemical and biological properties and greenhouse gas mitigation. Intelligent methods such as “precision irrigation” smart water supply systems, and tools to gauge soil moisture aid decision-making. These collective advances holistically encourage soil and water conservation, strengthen soil flexibility, and support agricultural sustainability to enhance food security to feed the world’s burgeoning population.
