Bio-Fabrication Techniques for Eco-Friendly Biomedical Devices
摘要
Biomedical devices have been an integral part of healthcare system since last few decades for various categories of patients. Some of such devices operate on power like cochlear implants, cardiac pacemakers, etc. while others do not like contact lenses or knee implants, respiratory masks, catheters etc. They offer specific advantages for the consumers. However, their production and use are challenging. Further the disposal of such devices poses huge amount of dump of medical waste which are majorly made of non-biodegradable plastics, polyvinyl chloride or phthalates out of which only a small percentage can be recycled, posing a threat to the environment. Thus, the need of the hour is to fabricate eco-friendly biomedical devices using bio-fabrication techniques to reduce the environmental load and toxic reactions in the environment. Recently the use of bio-plastics obtained from sugarcane and cornstarch have been studied upon. Further using batteries which can be recharged can reduce the load of disposable batteries. Paper based fuel cells can be used in batteries for energy generation for eco-friendly devices. The following review would illustrate the bio-fabrication techniques for generation of eco-friendly biomedical devices.
