Throughout history, human cultures have crafted diverse stories to explain the origins of the universe and of life, and these stories address many of the questions (and observations) that humans have asked themselves about the world. In some cultures, there is a clear arrow of time: there is an origin and there is change, which in some cases increases the “degree of perfection” of living beings, until reaching the pinnacle represented by humans (e.g. in the Abrahamic religions), and in some other cases decreases it, with a passage from the golden age, to the silver age, to the bronze age, to the age of heroes, up to the contemporary iron age, harbinger of wars (the idea of the ancient Greeks). Hinduism instead speaks of the universe cycling through endless creation, preservation, and destruction, under the supervision of the deities Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Actually, in our world one can find evidence both of periodicity as well as of irreversibility.
