There are many ideas in Schmitt’s Politische Theologie. The book’s title and subtitle indicate that the topics which he covers in this book include politics and theology as well as law, philosophy, and theology. The sheer breadth of Schmitt’s learning is daunting enough. However, many scholars read his books as if they were normal works written by normal scholars. Schmitt’s writings are not typical nor was Schmitt a typical author. He was always interested in the abnormal, the exceptional, and the unusual, and one understands his ideas better when one has a better understanding of Schmitt as a person. Schmitt’s works are highly personal; what he experienced in life is often transferred into words. Schmitt also regarded life as a conflict and he frequently considered his critics to be enemies. This was certainly true regarding Hans Kelsen. It is Kelsen who is frequently attacked in Schmitt’s works, but there are others as well in Politische Theologie. Schmitt often accused others of not providing answers and being too polemical. Politische Theologie is a polemical work and while it is ostensibly about “political theology” he does not really provide a definition of what that is.
