This chapter introduces Carl Schmitt’s conception of sovereignty and locates it within the context of his Politische Theologie (1922). It emphasizes the fact that while many commentators have tended to focus on Schmitt’s notion of “political theology,” his own emphasis was on the concept of sovereignty. That is made clear by the subtitle that he chose and by the title that he used in the three chapters which he contributed to Melchior Palyi’s 1923 two-volume collection dedicated to Max Weber’s memory. The chapter contains chapter overviews and provides clarification and comments about Schmitt’s sources.
