Edgar Allan Poe spent much of his life enthralled by the wonder he experienced within the space of science. The dialog with science informed much of his writing beginning with “Sonnet to Science.” Alongside science, however, Poe inhabited multiple intellectual and aesthetic spaces or worlds. The world of art, as much as the world of science, drew his interest. In Eureka, Poe explored the relationship between two of these worlds. The subtitle to this work says it all: An Essay on the Material and Spiritual Universe. Science is the space within which matter is observed and described. Religion is the space within which spirit is experienced and described. In Eureka, Poe carried on a dialog with the worlds of science and religion of his day, resulting in radically new visions of these spaces he inhabited.
