Since there is no inductive methodology, general knowledge cannot be derived from specific observations. Therefore, experimental methods such as Fisher’s that rely on induction do not work. Instead of induction, theory-driven research is the only path forward for social science. Successful sciences create theory and apply it to impose order on observations. If sociology is to progress as a science, it must also develop theory that imposes order. Theory imposes order through geometrically modeling its phenomena and applying its technical vocabulary. Only then can the discipline add to its theory toolbox to further explain complex phenomena and cumulate general knowledge.

摘要

Since there is no inductive methodology, general knowledge cannot be derived from specific observations. Therefore, experimental methods such as Fisher’s that rely on induction do not work. Instead of induction, theory-driven research is the only path forward for social science. Successful sciences create theory and apply it to impose order on observations. If sociology is to progress as a science, it must also develop theory that imposes order. Theory imposes order through geometrically modeling its phenomena and applying its technical vocabulary. Only then can the discipline add to its theory toolbox to further explain complex phenomena and cumulate general knowledge.
