The nuisances that occur every day in our lives, called daily hassles, persistently impact our feelings of wellness and have negative effects on our lives. Although they may not be objectively stressful or stressful to everyone, they are stressful because people perceive them that way. Daily hassles are unexpected, difficult to avoid, objectively small, and disruptive to our routine. These hassles increase our susceptibility to anxiety and depression and decrease our sense of self-worth and self-efficacy. It is not only the presence of too many daily hassles that affect people negatively, it is also deficits in uplifts that affect our well-being. Uplifts are the good things that happen to us during the day, and they are positive, unexpected, objectively minor, and lighten our stress load. Daily hassles and deficits in uplifts can affect students harshly. As a group, college students describe themselves as remarkably stressed and as tired, worn out, overwhelmed, depressed, and anxious. Healthy coping for students includes spending time with loved ones, taking breaks, sleeping well, and having solid go-to stress relievers, whereas unhealthy coping can include ignoring problems, online procrastination, substance abuse, and reliance on stimulants.
