The processing of coffee has environmental impacts especially when water is used. Microorganisms and other substances of the coffee cherry pollute the used water. This used wastewater can lead to the pollution of whole ecosystems, rivers and groundwater and pose lasting health risks for humans. In the following chapter, causes and effects are discussed and examples for good practice are described.
