This book chapter explores the role of social work in navigating and transforming the gendered dynamics within Kenya’s criminal justice system. It delves into how social workers address the disparities faced by women and other marginalised groups within the justice system, focusing on their multifaceted roles in advocacy, intervention, and support. Although the number of women incarcerated worldwide is rising more quickly, criminal justice systems typically concentrate on the requirements of the predominately male offender and prison population. A comprehensive set of targeted interventions is required to address the barriers women experience throughout the criminal justice system as guided by the Bangkok Rules on women offenders and relevant international standards and norms to effectively address gender-based discrimination against women in the criminal justice system. The chapter covers the definition of the criminal justice system, gendered criminal justice, theories of gendered criminal justice, gender issues in criminal justice, role of social work, conclusion, and recommendation.
