This study explores the relationship between student grade point average (GPA) and success on the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC) English licensure test. The test is mandated as a means of recruiting and licensing the best teachers, but its strengths and its relationship to GPA have rarely been explored in the case of Saudi Arabia. The quality of an education system depends on the qualifications of the individuals who enter and stay in the teaching profession. The 119 subjects for the study were graduate students from Saudi public universities who completed an online survey about their background and test scores. Subject selection was based on graduation year and completion of the ETEC licensure test. Our analysis indicated a statistically significant relationship between student GPA and the score on the licensure test. These results suggest that the desired level of quality in future English teachers is more likely to be associated with ensuring quality preparation and development at the university level.
