As in most other parts of the world, drawing among children is an important medium of expression, communication, and development in cognition. This paper looks into the relationship between children’s drawing and perceptual performance in Kelantan, Malaysia, during the monsoon season. The objective was to understand how children perceive their environment and communicate through the medium of artistic expression. Utilizing Piaget’s model of cognitive development, three selected drawings from the “Kota Hujan” program were analyzed. The subjects included a 9-year old, a 12-year-old, and a 7-year-old, each using different tools and styles. The three drawings gave variable approximations to different stages of cognitive development. These are the Gang Stage for the 9-year-old child, Pseudo-Naturalistic Stage for the 12-year-old child, and Schematic Stage for the 7-year-old child. The findings revealed that drawing activities are parallel to the development of children’s cognition and perception. This study suggests that drawing activities can be integrated into educational practices to support cognitive and perceptual development and highlights the importance of culturally sensitive educational materials.
