Community-based diversion programs are interventions designed for individuals accused of committing a criminal offense and are offered as alternatives to incarceration, depending on the severity of the charge. These programs aim to reduce further involvement in the criminal legal system by providing court monitored support and access to vital community resources such as employment, education, housing, and mental health services. However, social stigma and unmet needs can present significant barriers to participants success particularly when programs fail to address the impact of systemic oppression. For those interested in working with this population, it is essential to understand both the expectations of these settings and the challenges that may arise. This chapter draws on the author's professional experience to examine clinical practice within diversion programs and outlines practical strategies for implementing anti-oppressive approaches when working with youth involved in the criminal legal system.
