This introductory chapter addresses the need for a volume on anti-oppressive practice for beginning practitioners working with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Many of the contributors are members of the communities they serve and have a deep understanding of the interrelationship between the mezzo- and macro-level institutional systems that impact micro-level practice. Each contributor provides a positionality statement, along with a liberatory social justice perspective, consistent with the most recent Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) and ethical principles from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to the understanding of agency-based work in the dominant fields of practice: child welfare, education, health, mental health, youth justice, carceral systems, substance use, intimate partner violence, racial and other traumas, palliative care, world of work, and older adults. Many chapters provide case examples, inclusive of the intersubjective experience of the client-clinician dyad.
