Prison violence and victimisation are typically explained in the context of the performance of hegemonic masculinity and hypermasculinity. In this chapter, though, the analysis moves beyond the concept of masculinities to consider the importance of ‘carceral capital,’ social recognition, and respect. In addition, and set against this background, this chapter analyses the logic, norms, and culture of victimisation. It demonstrates that although the prisoner normative code continues to have salience, the central tenets have evolved in response to wider social and economic changes within and beyond the prison.
