This chapter positions experiences of prison violence and victimisation within individual life-course. In this way, it considers how trauma and tragedy shape not only the victims, but also the perpetrators. It challenges the assumption that those who are violent in the community will be violent in prison, and analyses why some young people desist from violence in prison, some continue to utilise violence as an adaptive strategy, and others turn that violence on themselves.
