Active transform faults beneath the Atlas Mountains range are responsible for intense seismic activity along SW-NE direction especially from Agadir to Al-Hoceima cities. Most of the seismic focuses are located on these active faults. The Atlas range is one of the most active areas in the word and has produced some of the damaging earthquakes known in history. The epicenter of the September 8, 2023 Mw 6.8 Morocco’s earthquake was located in the town of Ighil at Al-Haouz region, in the High Atlas Mountain range. Several houses have collapsed; others were sustained structural damage leaving thousands of homeless people. At least 2960 of deaths and more than 6125 of injured were reported according to the Moroccan authorities; the vast majority in Al-Haouz region and neighboring towns and villages. The earthquake was also felt in Spain, Portugal, Algeria and Mauritania. The earthquake occurred during about two minutes starting from 23:11:00 local time, and it was night, intense blue to bluish-white earthquakes lights (EQLs) were observed by several eyewitnesses, and recorded by a number of security video cameras. For our purpose, we have compelling evidences that the earthquake lights really exist, thanks to the widespread use of surveillance cameras but until today, there is no convincing explanation about the mechanism of their occurrence. In this work, we present the temporal correlation between earthquake lights and the seismogram of the earthquake of the Ighil/Al-Haouz, Morocco of the 8 September 2023 supported by trembling ropes, and the possible causes.
