The various techniques for measuring population growth and the yield coefficient of growth are discussed. At the cell level, the role of Z-ring activity is examined with respect to cell division. A discussion of major phases of growth examines the dynamics of the individual cell as physiological changes are a result of response to nutritional stress. Activities associated with sporulation and germination are evaluated, and factors leading to production of antibiotics, toxins, and bacteriocins are reviewed.
