The various enzymatic steps in synthesis of amino acids from dinitrogen, ammonia, and nitrate are outlined. The steps of nitrification involving ammonia and nitrite oxidation are presented. The use of nitrate and nitrite as electron acceptors is presented. Assimilatory reduction of sulfur to produce sulfur containing amino acids is presented and dissimilatory reduction of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide by anaerobic respiration is examined. The oxidation of sulfur and sulfur anions is discussed. The sulfur cycle in the human intestine is outlined.
