A material point is free when it can occupy any position in space. Its position will be determined by the forces that will act on it. Algebraically, the position of a material point is determined by three scalar parameters, for example its Cartesian coordinates x, y, z. If there are no geometric constraints on the point, its position is defined by three independent scalar parameters and we say that the material point has three degrees of freedom.
