The chapter is dedicated to the Byzantine missionary activities in the areas to the North of the Black Sea during the 860-ies, which encompass the first attempt at the Christianization of the Russians in the aftermath of their attack on Constantinople in 860 and the issue of the translation of the Christian liturgical writings into their language mentioned in the Old Slavonic Life of St. Constantine –Cyril, as well as his mission to the Khazars and his famous debate at the Khagan’s court.
