The chapter deals with the pontificate of the Patriarch Ignatius (847–858), accused by the opponents of having become patriarch only by the will of the empress and of not being canonically elected by the clergy, his relations with the Studites and the diminishing of the anti-Studite sentiment in the church, as well as with the new schism that erupted in it, that of Gregory Asbestas, who worked openly against the patriarch and attracted to his side many notable and influential figures, including Photius. The case was brought before the Pope and gave the Roman Church an opportunity to interfere in the internal affairs of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
