The chapter sums up in short the results of the Byzantine church policy of the preceding decades in the moment of the death of Emperor Basil I in 886. Although many of the major successes had been already lost, yet some of the most important ones were still visible—the Empire was religiously homogeneous, Bulgaria was under its strong spiritual influence, the Church of Constantinople now acted completely independently of the Roman and Eastern Patriarchates.
