The growing demand for long-duration missions in environments with limited solar exposure has made Nuclear Power Sources (NPS) an appealing alternative to solar energy for future missions. This paper outlines the European Space Agency’s (ESA) safety framework for safe use of NPS in space missions. It highlights the advantages of NPS, the inherent risks, and the comprehensive safety measures implemented through the Defence in Depth strategy, the As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) approach, and the ESA Nuclear Power Sources Policy principles.
