From Earth’s Laboratories to Interplanetary Bases: Cultured Fruits as a Sustainable Food Production System for Moon & Mars Settlers

This mini-review delves into cultured fruit techniques, enriching our understanding of past projects, current landscapes, challenges, deficiencies, and prospects in this unconventional fruit cultivation—an agricultural milestone. This innovative system augments sustainable food production for future lunar and Martian inhabitants and aims to restore Earth’s arable lands, currently monopolized by agriculture, to their natural state. Extraterrestrial colonization demands sustainable agriculture for lunar and Martian residents. Our research critically examines previous project results, identifies causative factors, scrutinizes shortcomings in cultured fruit experiments, and proposes solutions for designing a sustainable Cultured Fruit Production System (CFPS) as a blueprint for future experiments. This novel system can yield final fruits directly from undifferentiated plant cells, circumventing traditional fruit cultivation methods. Future iterations may integrate it with other systems, potentially even obviating the need for photosynthesis. It renders the reliance on photosynthesis for plant cell growth obsolete. Based on recent research findings, we address resource constraints and labor scarcity in extraterrestrial farming. This research sets the stage for a study poised to revolutionize agricultural paradigms for space settlers.
