Mehmet Selik (1932–2005) was a distinguished Turkish academic specialising in Marxian political economy and development economics. After graduating from Ankara University in 1954, he began his academic career there, eventually becoming an associate professor in 1968. His doctoral dissertation at İstanbul University focused on foreign capital and development in underdeveloped countries. Selik’s major contributions include his translations of works by Ricardo, Marx, Dobb, and Huberman. His seminal works, Marksist Değer Teorisi [Marxian Theory of Value] (1969b) and 100 Soruda İktisadi Doktrinler Tarihi [History of Economic Doctrines in 100 Questions] (1973), significantly impacted economic literature in Türkiye. He also served as a visiting researcher at prestigious institutions including the University of Cambridge and the London School of Economics. Beyond academia, Selik was politically active with the Workers’ Party of Türkiye (TİP), briefly serving as its general secretary. He retired from academia in 1982 following the military coup.
