Colorants are substances used to impart specific color to textiles, paints, ceramics, plastics, and so on. Two types of colorants are used for textile applications: dyes and pigments. Both dyes and pigments could be derived from natural sources. The limitations of the natural colorants are the availability of resources and the poor color fastness of the colored textiles. Traditionally, natural colorants have been derived from specific plant, animal, and mineral sources. Recent research studies have identified dyes from various waste sources which is a circular economical approach. Additionally, the waste or biomass is huge in quantity that ensures resource adequacy. This chapter discusses natural dyes and pigments from various sources and their application on textiles.
