A Critical Analysis on the Coloration of Textiles Using Natural Colorants
摘要
Natural colorants are equipped with medicinal rich qualities, sustainable, comfortable to human skin, and biodegradable. In the ancient times, the clothes were colored with natural colorants only. Later the emergence of synthetic colorants, their availability and their consistency in shade reproducibility shifted the dyers toward synthetic colorants. Even though various colors can be produced using synthetic colorants, their effect on human skin is not skin-friendly and many people report skin allergy/ailments. Nowadays people are very much conscious and expect eco-friendliness in whatever they use in their day-to-day activities and are paying more attention toward natural colored clothes. Even though the color fastness and the shade reproducibility are the challenging task in natural coloration, efforts have been taken by the natural dyers and researchers to resolve these problems. In this chapter, an attempt is made to explore the various natural resources and the possible colors produced from them. A critical analysis was carried out pertaining to the various techniques used for the natural coloration of textiles using different types of mordants and the coloration technique employed without the use of mordants.
