Our project explores the “inner worlds or mindsets” of leaders whom we select as role models for our time, the Anthropocene. By “inner world,” we aim to understand how leaders see, interpret, and understand their worlds. In turn, the aspirations of the leaders and how they perceive and evaluate themselves, their environment, their lived experiences, and work in practice will determine what actions they take. In our case, we are opening up the inner worlds of certain kinds of leaders, i.e., those who aspire to and make a positive difference in the world. Why is it important to know about the inner world of leaders? The future of human beings on our planet depends on the transformation of profit- and not-for-profit organizations to be progressive, as the old models of business will not suffice if we want human life on earth to continue and to flourish. We need people who have a fundamental belief in necessary change in our society and a revitalized connection to Nature. Thus, we must understand how individuals as leaders and role models are formed, motivated, and think. We believe that a holistic, personal, existential approach will illuminate interesting qualities of leaders that might resonate, inspire, and guide others to take up constructive transformations in the Anthropocene.
