Natural chromite belongs to a solid solution series within the spinel group ((Mg, Fe)(Cr, Al, Fe3+)2O4) and crystallizes in an isometric system with the class 4/m \(\bar{3}\) 2/m. The chromite end member contains more than 65 wt% chromium. Chromite has a normal spinel structure, usually with cubic close packing, featuring eight tetrahedral and sixteen octahedral sites per formula unit. However, in oxidized chromite, it exhibits a partly inverse spinel structure, where Fe2+ is partially or fully replaced by Fe3+. The mineral was named after the Greek word ‘chroma,’ meaning color. In 1765, the Russian geologist Pallas discovered chromite in a gold mine near Yekaterinburg, Russia.
