Limits of Robotized Unscrewing by a SCARA Robot

The performance limits of automated screw handling in a mock-up battery disassembly setup using a SCARA robot are analysed to address further automation potential in the processes. An improved heuristic based on Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is proposed to systematically evaluate potential for further automation. This heuristic aims to replace the traditional trial-and-error method of implementing new technologies with a structured, numerically driven evaluation of automation potential, for engineering practices. The proposed heuristic, termed the Computerization Potential Identifier (CPI), quantifies performance limits, identifying specific areas for further automation, robotization, and computerization. The approach is experimentally validated through an application in a robotized unscrewing task, providing a structured framework for enhancing system performance.
