Soil Physical Properties and Their Influence on Plant Growth

Soil physical properties are essential for understanding the performance of soil processes in relation to plant growth and development. Certain health indicators have direct impacts on crops and plants, while others exert an indirect influence by affecting various chemical and biological soil quality parameters. Presently, the concepts of soil health and quality are receiving increased attention globally. Although often considered synonymous, these terms refer to distinct aspects; inherent soil quality pertains to the natural composition and properties of the soil, which are influenced by factors and processes of soil formation. This chapter discusses the soil quality parameters that will inform the reader about aspects such as soil texture, structure, color, nutrient amount, and other characteristics, which collectively influence the soil's capacity for water and nutrient retention, cycling, transport, as well as crop selection and yield in specific regions. Additionally, soil carbon sequestration and nitrate leaching are examined. Key factors such as soil aeration and temperature play a critical role in the functioning of the microbial community, which is determined by soil redox potential and biochemical oxygen demand. Furthermore, we have highlighted not only soil physical quality parameters but also chemical and biological indicators of soil quality. Soil health is viewed as an integrated approach that encompasses all these parameters, aiming to sustain crop productivity.
