Climate Change Impact on Soil Systems and Agriculture Resilience

Globally, soil systems and agricultural practices are being profoundly altered by climate change, which presents both opportunities and challenges for enhancing food production’s resilience. The various effects of climate change on soil properties are examined in this chapter. These effects include changes in temperature on soil organic matter and microbial activity, modifications to precipitation patterns on soil moisture, and adjustments to soil pH and nutrient availability on soil health and crop productivity. It draws attention to the dangers associated with these changes, including increasing soil erosion, fertilizer runoff, and decreased fertility. In order to tackle these problems and improve agricultural resilience, the chapter looks at different approaches to adaptation and new technologies. These include the development of crop types that are tolerant to climate change, sophisticated water management strategies like drip irrigation and rainwater collection, and soil conservation measures like decreased tillage and cover crops. The practical application of these tactics is demonstrated through a discussion of successful case studies from various regions, including the Midwest of the United States, the Middle East, and West Africa. Future research priorities are also outlined in this chapter, with an emphasis on policy analysis, integrated soil and water management, resilient crop growth, and soil carbon dynamics. This chapter offers a paradigm for enhancing soil and agricultural resilience in the face of climate change by fusing scientific discoveries with workable solutions.
