Genetic and epigenetic factors are crucial for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Neurodegeneration is a consequence of dysregulation of both the genome and epigenome. Epigenetic processes, such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, or RNA interference, can lead to changes in protein expression, which results in the induction of pathological processes. Studies confirm the participation of these processes in the pathogenesis of diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, and other neurological diseases. Moreover, epigenetic factors, due to their ability to regulate protein expression, represent a promising therapeutic target for neurological diseases. In this chapter, we will discuss epigenetic factors with particular emphasis on their role in modifying the expression of genes involved in the pathogenesis of the mentioned diseases.
