“Something Broke”: The Impact of COVID-19 Lockdowns and Exit Strategies on Christian CrossFit Communities and the Relationship Between Faith-Fitness-Space
摘要
Christian CrossFit communities faced particular challenges through the COVID-19 pandemic: government mandated restrictions, lockdowns, and gym closures cut many Christian CrossFit athletes and communities off not only from their exercise community but from their faith community and the spaces in which they gather to strengthen their bodies, their faith, and their sense of belonging to both the Christian community and the CrossFit community. This chapter explores the impact COVID-19-related box closures had on how Christian CrossFit athletes experienced their sense of belonging to their faith community and the way they combine—and aim to strengthen—their fitness and their faith. It will explore the following questions: How did Christian CrossFitters experience the closure of CrossFit boxes? How did they experience being cut off from the in-person and bodily experience of fitness, their faith, and their faith community? How did they navigate the box closures, and did they stay in touch with their fitness-faith community? Interviews with Christian CrossFit athletes showed that COVID-19 broke something in the fitness-faith connection and that some Christian CrossFit communities struggled to recover.
