Language Maintenance and Revitalization vs Language Documentation
摘要
This book is about none of the topics in this title, but they come up so often in the literature on LEL that I thought it relevant to show why language advocates should be (more) aware of some aspects of these processes. They should realize that remedies work well if they are adapted to the specific health conditions being treated. I also show that LEL are consequences of changes in the ecosystems in which speakers/signers feel pressure to assimilate to, and do like, those who are doing well in the new socioeconomic world order. Their reactions have typically been wise adaptations to this new world order in which they want to survive well. I give examples of what has worked and what has not. Language advocates should also pay attention to cases of language resilience under comparable conditions and determine whether the relevant people are just buying time or have been reacting in a way that seems to work, not overlooking whether they are not disenfranchised economically and politically at the scale of the whole polity. If individual speakers/signers have sustained plurilingualism, what is the secret of this success when this solution has not worked for other ethnolinguistic groups in similar contact situations?
