Advances in Omics Approaches for Weed Management

In the past decade, the field of weed science has seen significant advancements through the application of omics techniques, leading to a deeper understanding of traits associated with weeds, including their invasiveness, hybridization, and resistance. The rapid progress in multi-omics research has been largely driven by advancements in sequencing technologies and analytical methodologies. Omics approaches offer extensive opportunities to uncover the molecular and physiological processes that contribute to the emergence of resilient weed species. The adoption of new “omics” technologies, such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other modern high-throughput molecular methods, in their application in weed biology research has notably increased. In weed science, these advanced omics platforms are increasingly being used to investigate the mechanisms underlying herbicide resistance, the evolution of weed resistance, and crop–weed interactions. The growing use of these sophisticated analytical tools not only deepens our understanding of weed biology but also aids in developing more effective management strategies. As research continues to evolve, the potential for these technologies to revolutionize weed science is substantial, paving the way for innovative solutions to ongoing agricultural challenges.
