We develop the basic theory of unicoherence, including its relations with open unicoherence and property (b). As applications we show that: the square \([0,1]\) in unicoherent; a disk cannot be retracted to its boundary; we prove the Mountain Climbing Theorem, and the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra.
